CPA exam study tip 2: The Cornell Note-Taking System

Cornell Note-Taking System - 6Rs

Cornell Note-Taking System - 6Rs

Why Take Notes?

- To summarize (important) information for review as the CPA covers vast amounts of information. I think it is easier to review the notes (just) before the CPA exam than it is to review the whole book or all DVDs or all CDs – whatever you got from the vendor.

- To actively participate in learning. You are not just sitting there reading. Well, I think reading and taking notes is more active and effective than just reading.

- The notes are more portable than the review book.

- [If you have other reasons, please put them in the comments below.]

How to take notes:

- There are many ways and recommendations on how best to take notes. You do what works for you. If what you have done has not worked or you are not happy with it, it may be time to try a different system for note taking. Personally, I like to hand-write or manually write (i.e. pen and paper) my notes. My reason is simple, I have read typed up stuff from the vendor’s book, I don’t intend to read typed up stuff again! In addition, I like to see my handwriting(!) even though my penmanship is not the greatest in the world.

The Cornell Note-taking System:

Record,

Reduce

Recite,

Reflect,

Review, and

Recapitulate

Please see the table (or image) above for some details. Here are further details on what each of the 6 Rs covers.

Thank you and I hope you found that helpful. Be Your Best.
